I just love the colors of the one on the end, the blue and brown. So very cute and fashionable! And what did you put in the tins? And did you remember Mrs. Overdorf?

Okay, this answer is for Alaina....My son, Noah is in Third Grade. Like all children he loves art. The school where he attends has an art teacher who has managed to squash that like a bug. I think in order to be good as an elementary school teacher, you have to at least appear to like children, and it helps to have a sweet disposition. As my kindergarten neighbor said about this woman.."she always looks like she wants to hurt someone."

She is one of those people who can never find anything nice to say about my child and her lesson plans consist of "draw whatever you want today." I met with her last year on teacher conference night to ask about my sons inability to draw and what could be done about it. She admitted that he draws like a pre schooler. I asked if she teaches sizing, horizon lines, and things like that. Her reply was " I teach the standards" When I asked if the kids were going to do any pottery work (because her school art room came equiped with a kiln that she has never used and we PAY to have an outsider come in and teach pottery in an after school club) her reply to me was " Pottery or ceramics? Which do you mean, there is a difference. So, I asked if she would be using her kiln and she said "No, it's not in the standards."

I know teachers have a lot to teach, and have standards to follow, but she just never seems to go above and beyond even a little bit.

Last year the art classes spent one whole month drawing posters for the Children's Museum art contest. I asked her how my son spent his month. He drew his poster the first day and was done. She told me the kids that finished early can draw whatever thay want and can work on the computers in her room. So, I felt she wasn't even trying to teach my son how to draw better.

I know, I know, we are lucky to have art in our public school at all. I just wish art was fun.

I swear this teacher turns her back when she sees me coming.

You know how it is, you can't get along with everyone. But, I will always fight for the right for my child to be educated to his fullest potential.

And no, I would never put ex lax in someone's cookies, but I would dream a sweet little dream about it in her case.

Where is the holdiday love? Maybe this teacher has had a rough year and has too much on her plate. There might be other distractions in the classroom that parents aren't aware of. My two good friends are both elementary teachers. They complain about class size and how they cannot give the children the individual attention they each deserve. Maybe she is a new teacher and would love suggestions. Have you went and personally chatted with her? Communication is the key. :) Maybe going to the counselors or principal if this is a major concern for you.

Try to stay positive. Everyone always has something going on and it isn't easy determining it. Sometimes we just need a little patience in understanding why people are the way they are.

hey, Tiff....if you knew this particular teacher, you'd know that she fits into the category "tenured and am going to do the bare minimum." it's not that they've not chatted with the teacher about their concerns (and there have been more than Judy), but that she refuses to listen. up until last year, the ONLY artwork we received back from art were pencil and marker drawings. even I do more than that with my dayare kiddos! :(

That makes me sad to hear because my niece goes to that school and she LOVES art! I guess it is a good thing we do so much at home otherwise she would miss out on to much!

come to think of it...unless some major redistricting goes on, this teacher will NEVER teach her art....she'll be going to another school for KG, methinks, unless her mom keeps her at the same school.....
